O Codify is to arrange things in a systematic order, to make something part of a system or classification, to categorize. O Difference (they happen in predictably different ways) O Similarity (things happen the same way) Researchers code their data both during and after collection as an analytic tactic. Same codes can be used repeatedly – researcher is looking for repetitive patterns and consistency O Encoding – when we determine its appropriate code and label it. O Decoding – when we reflect on a passage of data to decipher its core meaning In qualitative data analysis, a code is a research generated construct that symbolizes and thus attributes interpreted meaning to each individual datum for later purposes of pattern detection, categorization, theory building, and other analytic process.O Coding is the critical link between data collection and their explanation of meaning O Second cycle – the portions coded can be the exact same units, larger passages, analytic memos of the data. O First cycle – range from single word to a full paragraph to an entire passage of text Data can be interview transcripts, participant observations, field notes, journals, documents, drawing, and many other things.What is a Code? A word or short phrase that symbolically assigns a summative, salient, essence-capturing, and/or evocative attribute for a portion of language-based or visual aid. I would like to see a bit more description of that. I believe this gave me a good overview, but I still feel a bit confused at how to do that initial code and a secondary code to whittle the material down. Although it would be difficult in this book, I would have liked to see a bit more of what manual coding looks like.
The description of how to code was also well done. I specifically liked the idea that: “The intersection of one or more actors engaging in one or more activities at a particular time in a specific place” as a description of what to code. It defined what coding is and it also broke down how coding works. Summary: This chapter gave a good overview of the coding process for both manual and computer mediated coding.
